Graduate Medical Education

The University of Sydney Medical Program, which commenced in 1997, is a graduate level, four year curriculum. The program includes a significant amount of problem-based learning and small group tutorials. Geriatric Medicine provides its main clinical experience for students in a required, four-week hospital term in Year 3 of the course. This term has a very practical focus with students spending time in hospital, clinics, and on home visits, under the direct supervision of a geriatrician. Exposure to community services, such as the Aged Care Assessment Team, the Community Options Program, the Dementia Support Service, day centres and the day hospital occurs in the Community Term in Year 4, along with a number of lectures, problem-based learning sessions, and tasks which assess knowledge of geriatric medicine principles.
