Falls Related Research - Summary
Injury resulting from falls among older people constitutes a major health issue, both in the severity of injuries sustained by the individuals and, in the cost to the health system. As Figures 1 indicates, injury incidents due to falls increase with age and, the hip and lower limbs are the most prevalent body region affected by falls. As the proportion of older people increases within the overall population structure grows (see Figure 2 below), increasing fall related injuries are predicted. As part of CERA ongoing age-related research, our staff are involved in various studies and trials to monitor the incidence of falls, determine their cause, and propose intervention guidelines to prevent falls.
